What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have already posted about what technology I was going to use to create my magazine, I also wrote about there advantages and disadvantages.

After looking back at the technologies I used, I thought about how my media product would be different if I didnt have access to these technologies. There were very few things that I did with out using advanced technology. I used pen and paper to take note of a few things, but these were immediatly changed. For example, my shooting schedule was orginally written on paper, but I still decided to type it up simply for the fact it looks more presentable and it's easier to read. There were alot of things I took for granted throughout my coursework, for example a camera to take my pictures. Although my camera wasn't particularly advanced, it was crucial for takng my pictures for my magazine. Also, using editing software gave them a much more professional and desirable look. With out this, I would of had to use an existing image from another source or no image at all. Overall, I think that technology has benefited my media product greatly in creating a proffesional and modern feel.
I also thought about; 'is technology a subsitute for talent?' I agree with this statement to a small extent. I think that technology can be over used and things can be easily copied and this can mean that the person using it could have a lack of creativity. However, I think that technology can enhance existing talent. In this context of creating a magazine, I think that people can be creative in there ideas and technology can help create this. For example different fonts - these can be replicated throught the magazine and this would be alot more difficult by hand.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I have also thought about the male and female gaze. As my target audience are females I thought about how my main image would be attractive to females. After asking a few people, their main response was that they see celebrities as idols and the fact my model is smiling, it makes the image more appealing. One person also mentioned that they like to relate to the image as they want to be like there idol, and they like the fact they can find some similarities in themselves and the image. For example, using make up.
I also thought about the male gaze and the idea that my model is smiling makes her look happy and attractive appeals to males.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

From deciding I was going to do a pop magazine, I wanted to aim my magazine at 11 - 14 year old females. I have already described my target audience in another post - Target Audience (SAGEL).
On that post, I created an ideal target reader.

My main style model throughout my coursework was Top of the Pops. There target audience is very similar to mine and I wanted to create a magazine similar. I would say that my target audience is fairly niche. The main features of my target audience would be:
- aged between 11 and 14
- has an interest in pop music and the artists linked to this
- has additional interests in fashion, make up and celebrity gossip

I haven't aimed my magazine at males because I think the genre of music I have chosen and artists like this would appeal more to females. I have added some images in order to explain furthur who my target audience is and why. Also, who isn't!

These are images of my ideal reader. Young females, interested in make up and fashion. They look friendly and smily and this is usually associated with pop music. They would most probably be students, in full time education. They would be between the ages of 11 and 14. I expect for my target audience to be mainly (if not all) female. I have based aspects of my magazine, such as colour scheme, to appeal to mainly young girls. I expect my audience to be mainly white caucasian, however the magazine could easily appeal to other ethnicities. Their lifestyle would be classed as a 'stereotypical girly girl'.Aspects of their personality could be friendly, giggly, bubbly and happy. They would probably like colours such as pink, purple, blue and other pastel colours, associated with feminintiy and innocence. On my magazine front cover I thought about the artists which would appeal to them, they were artists such as: One Direction, Pixie Lott, Jessie J, Lady GaGa, Olly Murs and Justin Bieber. They would probably have additional interests like make up, fashion and socializing.

However, there are some people that my target audience wouldn't include...

This person wouldn't appeal to my target audience for various reasons:
- this person is male and my magazine is aimed at females.
- this person looks to old to be in my age group of 11 - 14.
- this person doesn't fit the stereotypical image of my target reader.
- (from this picture) this person doesn't look as happy and fun loving in comparison to the 2 pictures above.
- this person may not be a student (I think he looks early 20's), he could have a job and my magazine is aimed young people, who are very unlikely to have jobs.

However... This person is white caucasian. My magazine will mainly be consumed by this ethnicity. Althought, this isn't the only ethnicity that will be attracted to my media product.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have already created a Media Institutions post already. It lists some publishing companies in the UK and 2 in particular caught my eye, and these are the 2 companies that I considered for publishing my media product.

I have looked into these 2 publishers and researched what the have published.

Mary Glasgow has published a number of magazines. Some of these are aimed at young people, but not really around the age of my target audience.'Club' and 'Click' have both been published by Mary Glasgow.

These magazines are mainly gossip magazines, where as mine is a music magazine. Before researching media institutions, I had never heard of this publishing company or any of the magazines they produce. This made me want to think again about my options, so I returned to my style model.
The Top of the Pops magazine has been my main style model and insperation through out my coursework. The BBC distrubutes this magazine, and it seemed logical for mine to be the same. I think that my magazine has more music content than Top of the Pops. Therefore I think that it would be appropriate for the BBC to distrubute my magazine, as the content is different to my style model. I also felt reassured by the fact that I had heard of the majority of the BBC's magazines and they are an iconic and successful company. Also I think that this could make my magazine more appealing to a larger audience, so could hopefully expand my target audience.

I also wanted to think furthur about my magazine distrubution, and what sort of places I would like to sell my magazine. I think that stores such as WHSmiths would be a sensible place as they sell a wide range of magazines that appeal to people off all ages and all interest. But, not many music magazines. I went to a WHSmith store and found there was a very slim number of music magazines. This was another point that made me consider a store like this, as I think there is definatly a gap in the market for another music magazine.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

When creating my magazine, I had my target audience in mind. I also looked at my style models in depth and looked how social groups where represented in the magazine.

My social group are young girls who enjoy pop music. They also may be aspiring young musicians or want to have a career in the music industry. The genre of music is pop and it targets a younger audience and this type of music is usually very posative and bubbly. People associated with pop music are very smily, happy and friendly people who like to have fun. I believe that I have done well in choosing aspects of my magazine that will appeal to my target audience. For example, the use of bright colours, smily images and posative articles.

Pop music that is in my magazine is usually associated with females and this has effected the look of my magazine, like my pink, purple and blue colour scheme. My front cover shows my model smiling and looking friendly. This type of image occurs very regularly on a magazine front cover of this genre. I think that it represents the artists of pop music as being posative and upbeat. This is then transferred onto the reader, and they are seen as being happy and friendly. I took into accound the hair, make up and clothes my model is wearing, as I didnt want to represent artists and readers in the wrong way. My models hair is a natural dark brown and I wanted to avoid using a model that looked unnatural and fake, because some people see younger people as being 'too old for their age'. I wanted to keep the hair natural, have suttle makeup and have appropriate clothing, making sure it wasn't revealing or innappropriate.
I wanted my model to be someone for young girls to look up to. I think if a more perogative image was used on a magazine of this genre, aimed at this audience, I could represent the reader in a completly different way, as people tend to associate the talent with the reader.
I took care in choosing the celebrity names I used on my cover, for example Olly Murs, Pixie Lott and The Jonas Brothers. I thought about other news about them and I didn't want to use anyone that had been in the public eye for the wrong reasons (for example drugs and alcohol). This again can also represent the reader in the wrong way and they could be associated with the wrong things. Also, people look up to celebrities.
I chose to aim my magazine at 11 - 14 year olds because at this age you have alot of idols and can be inspired to have a musical career. Also, young people need posative role models to push them in the right direction. I think that this genre is the one that portrays the target audience in the best way. This way is very posative, freindly and happy.
There is a range of ethnicities in pop music, but the majority is white caucasian. This genre appeals to all ethnicities and I think this represents my social group in a posative way, and that all ethnicities can persue their dreams of a music career, or indeed any other career. I also think that pop songs are about alot of things the target audience will experience in their life. I think that the music can be very insperational and represents this social group in a good way - that the group is very together and are very supportive of one another.
